In order to help your child boost their language skills it is important to get into the habit of speaking more with them everyday.  Here are some tips to increase the amount you talk with them.

    • Talk about where you are, what you are doing, where you are going, what you can see, who is there etc. Think about what your child is seeing and how they may see it.  Describe what they would be interested in.
    • Even if they are not talking yet ask questions.  Exaggerate the way you ask the question so they understand that you are asking them something.  Remember they do not need to respond (although it’s always exciting when they do).
    • Get those amazing imaginations flowing with a simple object or person and tell them all about it.  E.G. find a bug and imagine what it day is like.  Who are they visiting, what are they doing, why are the doing it.
    • Talking to your child is not just about telling them stop or no.  Make speaking fun and positive.
    • Children understand more when we start thinking about the world at a young age.  Don’t dumb down your conversation with them just because they are a kid.  Use simple but real language.
    • Non-verbal communication is just as important to our language development as is our actual speech.
    • If your child is talking (even just a little) give them a chance to respond and reply.
